Fullerton is a historic Orange County city located bordering Anaheim around 22 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Featuring a vibrant downtown area with sophisticated dining and an energetic music scene, the city is also home to California State University, Fullerton.

Rising into the Coyote Hills to the north and west of the city, the highly sought-after Sunny Hills features contemporary single-family homes in a range of styles. Amerige Heights is another area of newer homes built on the former campus of the Hughes Aircraft Company. Founded in 1887, Fullerton offers an enticing mix of old and new architecture. Fullerton’s Cal State campus gives the city lots of youthful energy. Leo Fender invented the electric guitar in Fullerton in the 1940s, sparking a dynamic music scene that has endured in this city to this day. Bands and artists that emerged from Fullerton’s influential music scene include Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Jeff Buckley, and iconic punk bands such as The Adolescents and Agent Orange. Fullerton also has more than 50 city parks and a diverse theater scene.

Fullerton’s dynamic downtown area has seen a renaissance in the 21st century thanks to major city beautification and renewal projects. Downtown Fullerton preserves the city’s rustic historic character while adding modern amenities such as sidewalk cafés, diverse eateries, independent retailers, and entertainment venues. Beneath the Del Sol Hotel, The Cellar Restaurant serves award-winning upscale French cuisine and cocktails in a beautifully designed space with private leather booths and red velvet curtains. Angelo’s and Vinci’s repeatedly tops the lists of Orange County’s best Italian restaurants. This family-run Italian restaurant pairs sublime pizza and well-executed entrées with an impressive wine list in a colorful space decorated with Sicilian puppets. Heroes Bar & Grill is another distinctive local favorite serving classic American comfort eats alongside 119 varieties of craft beer on draft. Rutabegorz has an eclectic menu of vegan and vegetarian dishes, including fresh seasonal salads, soups, chili, and café-style light bites. Fullerton’s lively nightlife has seen OC Weekly dub the city’s downtown district “Bourbon Street West.” The eclectic and electric nightlife scene includes retro partying at Totally 80’s Bar & Grille, hip-hop at Asian bistro and nightclub Ziing’s, country music at In Cahoots, and DJ nights in the authentic 1920s speakeasy vibe of The Continental Room. Rising into the hills to the northeast, Summit House combines beef prime rib and other elevated gastropub fare with sweeping views over the city.

Things to Do

Fullerton’s unique musical heritage comes to the forefront every year on June 21 for the Day of Music. This huge celebration sees more than 40 venues across the city host a diverse lineup of over 150 different acts. Participating venues include the vintage 1920s Italian Renaissance-themed Fox Theater, which also hosts classic movie screenings and art exhibitions. Cal State Fullerton offers an award-winning MFA Theatre program, and the city features a number of storefront theaters staging innovative new productions. The Maverick Theater’s events lineup includes the bi-monthly Skipper Stand Up Show with entertainers from Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise in neighboring Anaheim. The Hibbleton Gallery showcases the work of underground artists at the cutting edge of the contemporary art world, as well as screenings of rare and international films. 

Fullerton’s many parks include 37.8-acre Hillcrest Park’s sprawling greenery and sports fields. The beautiful botanical gardens of the 26-acre Fullerton Arboretum includes plants from around the world near the city’s Cal State campus. At the city’s edge, miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding run through 124-acre Ted Craig Regional Park and 104-acre Ralph B Clark Regional Park.
